Lethal Weapon Review: Frankie Comes to Hollywood (Season 2 Episode 18)

Lethal Weapon, Reviews

On Lethal Weapon Season 2 Episode 18, “Frankie Comes to Hollywood,” Murtaugh finally has a chance to put his white whale away. It’s a shame that the guy didn’t do it this time around.

Instead of a quest for revenge, Murtaugh ends up working alongside a man who almost killed him 16 years ago. To say Murtaugh and Frank Kelso (the white whale) have a strange dynamic would be putting it lightly.

They share urologists. It’s strange.

Murtaugh: Trust me, you might want body armor this time.

Riggs: Yeah Rog, I’m not worried about a 70 year old man.

Murtaugh: Age is meaningless when you’re an unstoppable killing machine.

The case itself is okay.

Frankie isn’t a super interesting bad guy/former hitman. The whodunnit isn’t all that shocking nor captivating, and there’s never really an explanation as to why Frankie suddenly confesses when he realizes who is after him.

The implication is that Frankie is recognizing that he deserves whatever is coming his way, but there’s no elaboration there.

Honestly, the best parts of the case are the personal storylines that tie into it.

Riana always brightens things up whenever she makes an appearance, especially if she’s given a storyline and doesn’t simply appear in one scene. Murtaugh teaching her to drive is hilarious.

The best part about Murtaugh’s relationship with Riana is how well she can hold her own against him. She can turn one of Murtaugh’s jokes or lines on him in an instant, and she does it so well.

Riana and Murtaugh have such an amazing relationship, and it’s always great whenever it’s showcased during an episode.

One thing that would have made this learning to drive storyline better is if Trish joined Murtaugh and Riana on a driving lesson. Can you imagine Riana attempting to drive while Trish and Murtaugh argue over teaching tactics? It could have been hilarious.

Riggs’s scenes with his father aren’t as enjoyable as Murtaugh and Riana’s scenes.

Like Riggs, when his dad apologizes and starts being helpful, it’s off-putting. I don’t know about you, but all the red flags went up on my end.

It feels too good to be true, and there has to be a double cross coming somewhere. He holds his own when he gets jumped after Riggs hangs up on him, so there’s this suspicion that maybe Riggs’ dad is using Riggs to get out of prison.

Honestly, it would be more enjoyable if Riggs’ dad ended up being a reformed man and didn’t get out of jail and bring a whole mess of drama back into Riggs’ life, but I’m not all that optimistic that things will work out this way. What’s your theory?
