Orange is the New Black Review: Piece of Sh*t (Season 4 Episode 6)

Orange Is the New Black, Reviews

Orange is the New Black Season 4 Episode 6 gives us a glimpse into the facility down the hill. Nicky is celebrating three years clean and reminds of one thing that Season 3 was missing: her snarky attitude.

Take her acceptance speech from when she’s awarded her three-year AA chip:

I should have just gotten locked up a decade ago, saved my mom a suitcase of cash.

This is the first glimpse of Nicky we’ve had since she first got sent down to Max. With this episode, we also get a look at Vee’s would-be assassin and Stella after Piper set her up.

The irony of it is that although this is a more secure facility, there are just as many leaks in the ship. Heroin is readily available to the inmates. A guard easily passes a bag to Stella out in the yard.

Yet, Nicky defends her sobriety. She refuses to speak to Stella if she’s even touching heroine and she doesn’t want to jeopardize her straight and narrow path by smuggling contraband into the SHU.

In moments like these, we can be proud of Nicky.

You also have to admire the guts it takes to send Luschek letters calling him all sorts of names.

Come on, if you were Nicky, doing time because your would-be accomplice sent you down the river, you’d be a little angry too.

Tell me you wouldn’t send letters to remind him that you were still there and would haunt him for the rest of his days.

It’s fitting that Luschek needs Judy King to help bail him out of his guilty conscience. Her money and connections are able to get Nicky transferred and if it wasn’t for her, Nicky would still be in max.

What should be a happy moment turns bittersweet when Nicky sees the inside of Sophia’s cell.

When we first met Nicky in the first episode, she had just been let out of the SHU so she knows what those conditions can do to someone. She sees the blood on the wall and she knows immediately that things aren’t going right.

Nicky may feel some guilt herself after seeing Sophia’s cell because that is what causes her to fall off the wagon.

The juxtaposition between Caputo signing her transfer papers and Nicky “purchasing” drugs from a guard is heartbreaking.

If there is one thing we know, Red doesn’t like drugs. If she finds out that Nicky is using it isn’t going to end well.

The really sad part is that the sale of drugs isn’t even the most illegal thing in the prison!

In addition to the gang activity and drug sales, Taystee, Cindy, and Suzanne are hatching a plan to use Abdullah’s contraband cell phone to try and sell close up photos of Judy King to a magazine.

Meanwhile, the guards are teaching the inmates in electrical to install illegal cable.

All of these illegal skills are in stark contrast to Caputo wanting to bring in enrichment classes. You may be a little too late Caputo!
