The Magicians Season 2 Episode 13, “We Have Brought You Little Cakes,” is, overall, an exceptional season finale.
I’m going to be honest, going into the season finale I wasn’t quite sure where we would end up, being that the fate of magic was in the balance. But, even though magic was ultimately taken away, this episode proves to be one of the strongest of the season.
Here are my top moments from the season finale of The Magicians.
Julia Getting Her Shade Back
I know, technically Julia got her shade back in episode 12, “Ramifications,” but this is the first time that we’re getting to see her with shade intact.
That being said, watching Julia have to go through the agonizing pain of feeling everything that she did during her non-shade days is torture, both for her and viewers.
I missed this Julia, the Julia that has emotions and cares how she interacts with the people close to her. I’m especially looking forward to seeing the banter between Julia and Quentin again now that Julia is back to her old self.
Alice and Quentin
I can’t forgive Quentin for putting Alice’s shade back inside her; it’s not something that she wanted, and it’s not something that she should have to go through because he loves her. I am fully on her side of this; she has every right to be mad at Quentin and to give him the cold shoulder.
Alice was one of the most powerful witches in their group, and now she’s starting over completely. Going from being a niffin who has all of the power in the world to a helpless, weak, and starving Magician, again, is one of the worst feelings she’s ever had to endure.
Heck, even starting completely over in the magic world she’s still far smarter than Quentin will ever be.
It’s going to take some time for things to start getting regular again between Quentin and Alice.
That being said, it does make me happy that they finally got close enough again and slept together. Part of her is starting to come back and feel normal again. But, this doesn’t excuse Quentin’s actions, and I think that he needs to be held accountable even going into Season 3.
Eliot and Margo
The strain on Margo and Eliot’s relationship isn’t going to go away anytime soon, not after what Margo did, but it does bring me joy seeing them back together trying to get Fillory back in order.
Margo is the type of ruler who wants to control everyone in the region. She is a take-charge kind of leader who wants people to bow to her every move.
Eliot? Well, Eliot is the kind of leader who wants people to feel like he cares. He seeks to have a decent relationship with the people of his kingdom, and right now that isn’t something that’s going to happen.
With no magic and the fairies attacking Fillory just what can they do?
There is no more magic in the world, Fillory is being attacked by fairies, Alice is being hunted down, Eliot’s baby is still being held captive by the fairies, and everyone is holed up at Brakebills in case magic comes back anytime soon.
The characters we love are in a predicament, but it’s exciting trying to think of the many ways that this could go down.
Will Fillory be taken over by the fairies or will Margo and Eliot try to fight back?
Who is hunting Alice down? What can she do with no magic?
As for Julia, it makes sense that she is the only one who is starting to get her magic back. After all, she was the constant that was changed to save everyone in the magical world. She is the puzzle piece that everyone needs.
“We Have Brought You Little Cakes” is most definitely a better season finale than what we saw in Season 1.
