BET’s newest series, The Quad, is a show you should definitely have on your radar. The drama focuses on the students and administrators of Georgia A&M, a fictitious Historically Black College or University.

I had a few questions for Michelle DeFraites, who plays Madison Kelly, about her character on The Quad, how she became interested in acting, and more.

Tell-Tale TV: When did you decide to start acting, and what led you to that decision? You began at a young age, correct?

Michelle DeFraites: I was watching Disney Channel with my dad one day, and I looked at him and said, “I can do that. I want to do that.” He believed that I could, so we started making arrangements almost immediately to give it a shot! I tried to act locally for a few years before making the move to LA when I was fourteen.

Tell-Tale TV: What was it that drew you to the role of Madison, and what was your reaction when you first read the script?

DeFraites: I loved the twists and turns of the pilot. There was so much going on; I couldn’t stop reading and I needed to know what happened next.

That’s my favorite thing that a show can do is leave you wanting more. Madison is such a sweet girl and a loyal friend, but she is going through her own struggles too, and it’s fun to play a character with some depth like that.

Tell-Tale TV: What would you say is the biggest challenge in playing your character?

DeFraites: The biggest challenge is doing the accent! Ha ha, I’ve tried my whole life to not have a southern accent, coming from south Mississippi, and of course they ask me to have one for this character!

Tell-Tale TV: If you had to describe The Quad in just three words, what would they be?

DeFraites: Exciting, sexy, and real.

Tell-Tale TV: Is there anything you can tease about upcoming episodes?

DeFraites: There are some issues that we are dealing with in society, especially on college campuses, that some upcoming episodes really delve into. It’s going to spark a lot of conversations!

Tell-Tale TV: What have you learned from working on The Quad that you could carry with you to future roles?

DeFraites: With this being my first series, I’ve learned how to really develop a character over time and continue to show new aspects of that character every week.

Tell-Tale TV: In addition to acting, you also have a fashion and style blog. What can you tell us about that?

DeFraites: The blog is called Street23, and it tackles men’s and women’s fashion. It shows guys and girls how to wear certain items or trends that are popular at the moment as well as just showing off some of our favorite pieces.

We also just started doing fun videos and vlogs when we travel that help you get to know us a little better.

Tell-Tale TV: When you have the time, what kinds of things do you like to watch on television? Is there a show you could watch over and over?

DeFraites: Right now I love watching How To Get Away With Murder, but my favorite show of all time is The Office. I’ve watched it all the way through at least three times!

Be sure to catch Michelle DeFraites on The Quad, airing Tuesdays at 10/9c on BET.
